Introduction
To add an EIN to your Florida LLC, you apply directly with the IRS using Form SS-4. It's free, and if you apply online, you get your Employer Identification Number (EIN) immediately. Your Florida LLC needs to be registered with the state before you apply.
What is an EIN and why does your Florida LLC need one?
An EIN is a 9-digit number the IRS assigns to your business — think of it as a Social Security number for your LLC. The IRS uses it to identify your business for tax purposes, and you'll need it for several core business activities.
Most Florida LLC owners need an EIN before they can do much of anything — open a business bank account, hire employees, or file a business tax return. Banks won't open a business account without one, and payroll systems require it to withhold taxes correctly.
Hiring employees — you need an EIN to run payroll and withhold payroll taxes
Opening a business bank account — banks require an EIN to confirm you're banking as a business, not as an individual
Filing business tax returns — your EIN goes on every return and IRS document your LLC files
Building business credit — lenders use your EIN to evaluate your LLC's creditworthiness separately from your personal credit
Buying inventory for resale — your EIN can serve as proof of business status, which may exempt you from paying sales tax on goods you resell
Does your Florida LLC need an EIN?
Most Florida LLCs need an EIN, even if they don't have employees yet. A single-member LLC with no employees can technically use the owner's Social Security number for federal taxes — but an EIN keeps your personal number off business documents and makes it easier to open a business bank account.
Multi-member LLCs are required to have an EIN regardless of whether they have employees. And any LLC — single-member or multi-member — that elects to be taxed as a corporation needs one too. In practice, getting an EIN early is the cleaner move for almost every Florida LLC.
How to apply for an EIN for your Florida LLC
You apply for an EIN directly with the IRS using Form SS-4. Your Florida LLC needs to be registered with the state before you apply — the IRS requires a valid business entity to issue an EIN. Once your LLC is active, you have 4 ways to apply.
Online (fastest)
Apply through the IRS EIN Assistant at irs.gov/ein. You'll answer a short series of questions and receive your EIN immediately at the end of the session. The online application is available Monday through Friday, 7 AM – 10 PM ET. This is the fastest option by far — most applicants finish in under 15 minutes.
By fax
Complete Form SS-4 and fax it to the IRS. Processing takes about 4 business days, and the IRS faxes your EIN back to the number you provide on the form.
By mail
Mail a completed Form SS-4 to the IRS. Processing takes up to 4 weeks. Use this option only if you have no time pressure — online or fax are faster in every case.
By phone (international applicants only)
If you don't have a U.S. Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, you can call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line to apply by phone. This option is not available to domestic applicants who can apply online.
How much does an EIN cost in Florida?
Getting an EIN from the IRS is free. There's no state fee in Florida and no IRS fee — you apply, and the IRS issues your EIN at no charge. The only cost involved is your time.
If you'd rather not handle the application yourself, we offer an EIN package for $70. We complete the Form SS-4 process on your behalf and deliver your EIN so you can move on to the next step. Several customers who've used Bizee for LLC formation have noted that bundling the EIN with formation saves time and keeps everything in one place.
How long does it take to get an EIN in Florida?
The timeline depends entirely on how you apply. Online applications through the IRS EIN Assistant are processed immediately — you get your EIN at the end of the session. Fax applications take about 4 business days. Mail applications take up to 4 weeks.
One thing that catches people off guard: the IRS online application is only available Monday through Friday, 7 AM – 10 PM ET. If you try to apply outside those hours, the session won't complete. Plan accordingly if you're working on a deadline.
Should you add your EIN to Sunbiz?
Florida's Division of Corporations — known as Sunbiz — maintains your LLC's public record. You can add or update your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) on Sunbiz, but it's not required. The IRS and Sunbiz are separate systems, and your EIN is issued by the IRS, not the state.
That said, keeping your Sunbiz record current is good practice. If your LLC's contact information, registered agent, or FEIN changes, you can file an amendment through Sunbiz to update the record. Be aware that information filed with Sunbiz becomes part of the public record — your EIN will be visible to anyone who searches your LLC.
If you're looking to add a member, change your registered agent, or update your address, those are separate Sunbiz amendment processes. Adding your EIN to Sunbiz is optional and doesn't affect your LLC's standing with the IRS.
FAQ
Generally, yes. Multi-member LLCs are required to have an EIN. Single-member LLCs without employees can technically use the owner's Social Security number, but an EIN keeps your personal number off business documents and is required to open most business bank accounts. Getting one early is the cleaner move for almost every Florida LLC.
Apply directly with the IRS using Form SS-4. The fastest way is online at irs.gov/ein — you get your EIN immediately at the end of the session. The online application is available Monday through Friday, 7 AM – 10 PM ET. You can also apply by fax (about 4 business days) or by mail (up to 4 weeks). There's no Florida state fee and no IRS fee.
It's free. The IRS charges nothing to issue an EIN, and Florida has no state fee for EIN applications. If you'd prefer to have someone handle the application for you, we offer an EIN package for $70 — we complete the Form SS-4 process and deliver your EIN.
It depends. If you previously had a sole proprietorship EIN and then formed an LLC, the IRS generally requires a new EIN for the LLC because it's a different legal entity. You can't transfer an EIN from one entity type to another. If you're unsure whether your existing EIN applies to your new LLC, a tax professional can help you figure out the right answer for your situation.
FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number) is another name for an EIN — they're the same thing. You apply through the IRS, not through a Florida state agency. Use the IRS EIN Assistant at irs.gov/ein to apply online and get your FEIN immediately. Your Florida LLC needs to be registered with the state before you apply.
It's optional. Sunbiz is Florida's business registry, and you can update your LLC's record to include your FEIN — but it's not required. Your EIN is issued by the IRS, and the two systems operate independently. Keep in mind that anything filed with Sunbiz becomes public record, so your EIN will be visible to anyone who searches your LLC's filing.
